KitchenPal alternative: Smart Pantry vs KitchenPal

Last checked: October 27, 2026

KitchenPal does more than Smart Pantry. It has shared grocery lists, a meal planner, recipe search by ingredient and a web app. Smart Pantry covers a smaller job: it tracks what you have and when it expires, reads the date from a photo of the label, and sends a summary of what expires soon. Pick KitchenPal if you plan meals and shop from lists. Pick Smart Pantry if you want food to stop expiring at the back of the fridge.

What the KitchenPal app does that Smart Pantry does not

KitchenPal is a shopping and kitchen app with a pantry inside it. These features have no match in Smart Pantry:

If you use two or more of these every week, KitchenPal is the better fit, and Smart Pantry is not a replacement for it.

What Smart Pantry does differently

Smart Pantry is built around the date. When you add an item you can point the camera at the label and let AI read the expiry date from the photo, or tap 3, 5 or 7 days for fresh food. The list sorts by the date, so what expires first is at the top.

Every Sunday the app sends a summary of the food that expires soon. With Smart Pantry Plus the summary comes every day. When you open a jar or a pack, you mark the item as opened and set a new date. When you use it or throw it away, you mark it as consumed or discarded, so the list matches what is in the kitchen.

You can start without an account, and sign in with Google or Apple later to keep the pantry safe if you lose the phone. A household shares a pantry through an invite code.

KitchenPal Premium and Smart Pantry Plus prices

KitchenPal is free to download. On its website, Premium costs $3.99 a month, $14.99 a year or $29.99 once, and a Family Lifetime pack costs $39.99 once. Its App Store listing says that when you upgrade, your family members are upgraded for free. KitchenPal says prices can vary by country.

Smart Pantry is free, with ads. Smart Pantry Plus is an optional subscription that removes the ads, lets AI read expiry dates without a video first, gives more AI recipe ideas and photo scans each day, and sends the summary every day. The US App Store lists it at $3.99 and $22.99.

Moving from KitchenPal to Smart Pantry

Smart Pantry cannot import a list from another app, so you add your food again. The barcode scanner makes this faster, and a product your household has named once is filled in on the next scan. Start with the fridge, where the dates are shortest, and add the cupboard later.

If you use the KitchenPal grocery list, keep it. Smart Pantry has no shopping list, and the two apps can run side by side: KitchenPal for the shop, Smart Pantry for the dates.
